What do you do when you get injury advice you don’t want to hear?
Most athletes have been there…being told they are injured and are likely to miss the one game that matters, the selection trial, the last game of the season, the Grand final!
For every injury there are two recovery protocols – ‘best practice’ and ‘Reality’!
Best Practice is the accepted rehabilitation progression milestones and timeframe for return to play from date of injury, based on structural damage.
Reality includes consideration of the athlete’s acceptance of the risk of further damage. They must accept that any decision to attempt early return to play comes with risk. The task of the medical staff working with athletes for early return to play is to minimize risk. Milestones must still be met and protocols followed. But with hard work and commitment, best practice timeframes can be condensed to get a play safely back on the field.
